Welcome to Chireno, Texas

Chireno traces its beginnings to the first half of the nineteenth century, when Anglo-American settlement was spreading through what was then Mexican Texas. The community developed along the historic route connecting Nacogdoches with areas farther east and south. Its location near the Old San Antonio Road, often called El Camino Real, placed the area near one of the most historically significant transportation corridors in Texas.

The community's unusual name is generally associated with José Antonio Chirino, an early settler and landholder in the area during the Mexican period. Over time, the spelling became "Chireno." Agriculture, timber, and local commerce became important parts of the community's economy as settlement increased during the nineteenth century.

Like many East Texas towns, Chireno developed around churches, schools, farms, stores, and family-owned businesses rather than becoming a large commercial center. Cotton and other agricultural products were historically important, while the extensive pine forests of East Texas supported timber and lumber activity.

Today, Chireno remains a very small incorporated city with a distinctly rural character. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, its population was roughly 370 residents. Despite its size, Chireno serves as a recognizable community center for families living throughout the surrounding countryside.

One of the community's central institutions is the Chireno Independent School District, which serves Chireno and surrounding rural areas. As is common in small Texas communities, the school district plays a larger role than simply providing education: school activities, athletics, and community events help bring residents together.

The surrounding landscape is representative of the East Texas Piney Woods, with pine and hardwood forests interspersed with pastures, farms, creeks, and rural homesteads. Nacogdoches, the county seat and one of the oldest communities in Texas, provides Chireno residents with many of the larger-area services, shopping, employment, and educational opportunities.
